Clavier-Übung 1: Prelude and Fugue

recording
Clavier-Übung 1: Prelude and Fugue was written during a brief period where re-engaging the forms and topics of Johann Sebastian Bach’s work was a focal point in my work. This piece, like Orgelbüchlein, takes fragments and gestures from the keyboard works of Bach and places them in uncanny contexts and removes the solidity of their former identity. This piece was written for Jonathan Hannau, and it was premiered on a solo piano concer that he performed on the Frequency Series at Constellation in Chicago.
