it’s all real was written for the 2021 Yarn/Wire Institute and was later revised upon its premiere performance at NUNC! 5 at Northwestern University. This piece was an early exploration of AB form in my work. The opening section was dedicated to Alvin Lucier who was in declining health during the writing of the work. The second section was dedicated to McCoy Tyner, whose harmonic language in his solo work and his work with John Coltrane is a hallmark of the sensibility I was drawn to in childhood—echoes and distant resemblances of his voicings appear in this work.
