rare sight left right is a study of time through the viewpoint of train travel in America. The film was shot from the window of a Vermonter traveling between White River Junction, Vermont and Baltimore, Maryland in the summer of 2022. Trains are a prominent subject in two filmmakers I have long been inspired by: J.P. Sniadecki and James Benning. Where Sniadecki observes the behavior of people travelling long distances by train in China, and Benning witnesses trains traversing the land in various locations in the US, my film is a study of first-person sight and the way in which gazing alters our experience of time.
