The Harvest Manual was written for the unique 1/6th-tone harmonium built by August Forster on occasion of the Microfest Prague festival of microtonal music. This instrument is most closely associated with the Czech composer Alois Hába who wrote several pieces for the instrument. Czech pianist Miroslav Beinhauer was the performer who gave the first performance.

This work was the inciting factor in a fascination that would develop of how a “harmonic language” can be constructed through emphasizing voice leading in sub-semitone pitch space rather than assuming its indentiy must be determined by vertical intervalic qualities.
