Williamstown Nocturne
by Jack Langdon & I/O Ensemble

released January 31, 2022
self-released

recorded, mixed, mastered by Jack Langdon

recording
Williamstown Nocturne was recorded for the occasion of Williams College’s annual I/O Festival of New Music. I was invited by percussion professor Matt Gold to create a new work with his students, which took the name of the recording itself, and featured three sections that featured myself at the E.M. Skinner organ accompanied by a mixed ensemble of student performers. I lead the students in a series of exercises to encourage them to explore the possibilities of their instruments.  These exercises were then applied to the constraints and prompts of the text score for the work and was performed for a small local audience. Positioned in the reverberant chancel of the sanctuary, all the tones immersed the audience, who sat in the choir stalls surrounding the ensemble.

Thanks to the music students of Williams College, Matt Gold, and Edwin Lawrence for the invitation to make music at Williams on a frigid January night in the Berkshires.
